More than 60 people attended the blessing and formal opening of the refurbished part of the Old Convent building on Byng Street in Orange on 13^th of June.  

Bishop Michael acknowledged the history of the convent and its particular relevance to the Sisters of Mercy. He also mentioned the importance the work of Centacare as the mission of the Church and expressed the hope that the new office will revitalise Centacare’s services to the community in Orange.

 “This building is of much historic importance and is steeped in character. We are extremely privileged to have been able to rescue, at least part of it, from dilapidation”, said Robert George, Director of Centacare Bathurst.

“I am very grateful to Fr Paul Devitt and the parish finance committee for allowing Centacare to take on this project and to Michael Croke for joining the venture. Centacare of Bathurst diocese will have a very good base in Orange to operate from”. This office will supplement Centacare’s Wambigi Indigenous Community Links office on Glenroi Avenue.

The chapel, which will primarily be used by Catherine McAuley Catholic Primary School, is the jewel in the crown.

The members of the congregation of the Sisters of Mercy who attended the function were delighted to see their old home given a new lease of life.

Only the ground floor of the building has been refurbished at this stage. Once there is a solution to the fire safety requirements, the dream of refurbishing the first floor may turn to reality.

Fr Paul and Robert wish for the community to get the best use of the building. The chapel will be available for functions such as weddings and there are enough rooms for meetings and small gatherings.  Centacare will resume its counselling services and relationship & community education programmes in Orange very soon in the new office.
